# Travel eSIM, roaming or a local SIM?

For most trips a travel eSIM is the most flexible, cost-effective choice: you install it before you leave, buy only the data you need and keep your main number on. Roaming is your carrier opening your own line abroad; it is easy but usually comes with large, expensive passes. A local physical SIM can only be bought from a shop after you arrive and may mean taking out your physical main SIM.

## Three options, three very different trips

1. Roaming

Nothing to set up, but large, expensive roaming passes.
2. Local physical SIM

Bought from a shop after you arrive; you may have to remove your main SIM.
3. Travel eSIM

Installed before you leave; just the data you need, with top-ups when you want.

On supported dual-SIM phones your main number stays on alongside the eSIM.

## Roaming: easy, but expensive

Roaming is your own carrier opening your line and plan for use abroad. There is nothing to install; you pay for that convenience in the price.

Carriers usually sell roaming as fixed daily or weekly passes. These can include more than you need and can cost on average 50–70% more than a travel eSIM for the same trip. Usage outside the pass can be billed on top.

## Local physical SIM: looks cheap, takes effort

You can only buy a local SIM from a carrier shop after you arrive, and many countries require ID registration. Until you reach a shop you are either offline or paying high roaming charges.

If your personal line is a physical SIM, you may have to take it out to insert the new card, so calls and texts to your main number can’t reach you. Local carriers’ plans and prices are also hard to compare in advance.

## Travel eSIM: flexible, and you’re in control

You install a travel eSIM on your phone in minutes before you leave, then switch mobile data to it when you land. There is no physical card to insert.

You choose the plan for your trip: the country, the days you stay and just the data you need. You compare prices in advance, and if your data runs out you continue with a top-up.

On supported dual-SIM phones your main line stays on, so calls and texts to your main number still reach you. Check your home carrier’s charges for incoming calls and SMS abroad.

## Side by side

How the three options compare for the same trip:

Roaming, local SIM and travel eSIM

| Option | How you start | Your main number | Cost and flexibility |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Roaming | Your own line works abroad; nothing to do | Stays on | Fixed roaming passes; can cost 50–70% more on average |
| Local physical SIM | Bought from a shop after you arrive; ID registration in many countries | Unreachable if you remove a physical main SIM | Hard to compare plans in advance |
| Travel eSIM | Installed in minutes before you leave | Stays on with supported phones | Just the data you need, with top-ups |

## Separate app calls from carrier calls

WhatsApp and other app calls use internet. Carrier calls and texts use the selected line's own capabilities and billing arrangement.

If your existing WhatsApp account only needs internet, a new registration number is a separate choice. For new registration, choose a suitable OTP route or mobile-number eSIM.

## Set the phone deliberately

Select the intended mobile data line and review automatic data switching. Apply the travel package's roaming instruction to its line while reviewing the home line's terms separately.

Keep the home number available only in the way you intend and understand any carrier charges. Restore the preferred data and call settings after returning.

## Your take-away checklist

- List the countries and days of your trip.
- Compare your carrier’s roaming price with an eSIM for the same trip.
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you leave.
- On arrival, switch mobile data to the eSIM and keep roaming off on your main line.

## Common questions

Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming?

For most trips, yes. Carrier roaming passes can include more than you need and can cost on average 50–70% more for the same trip. With a travel eSIM you pay only for the data you need.

Does my main number stay on?

On supported dual-SIM phones, yes: the eSIM handles data while your main line keeps receiving calls and texts. Check your home carrier’s charges for incoming calls and SMS.

Can I buy a local SIM before I leave?

Usually not; a local SIM is bought from a shop in the country, and many countries require ID registration. A travel eSIM can be bought and installed before you leave.

Does a data eSIM replace carrier SMS?

A data-only package supplies internet. Carrier SMS needs the appropriate home line or a package that includes it.

What if I’m visiting more than one country?

Choose a multi-country plan that covers every country on your route, and move between countries on one eSIM. Check the coverage list before you buy.
