# How much mobile data do you need for travel?

Estimate your daily mobile data, multiply it by the days you need coverage and add a margin for changes in use. Use your own recent usage as the starting point. Then compare the estimate with a package's allowance, validity, coverage and top-up conditions.

## Build your data estimate

1. Daily use

Use a recent day or several days of your own mobile-data usage.
2. Travel days

Include every day you expect to need mobile internet.
3. Extra data

Allow for navigation, media, backups and sharing a hotspot.

The estimate helps compare allowances; it is not a measurement of future consumption.

## Help me choose

1. Duration
2. Your data use

### How long is your trip?

Use the formula and example table below for the calculation.

## Start with the way you actually use data

Use recent mobile-data usage from your phone as a starting point. Separate Wi-Fi use from mobile use, and consider whether your travel routine will be different.

Maps, messaging, app calls, photos, video and cloud backups have different patterns. A laptop connected by hotspot can use data that does not appear to be phone browsing.

## Multiply by the days you need coverage

Estimate = daily data × travel days × the extra-data factor. A 20% extra-data margin uses a factor of 1.20.

For example, 0.3GB per day for seven days with a 20% margin is 2.52GB. These are example inputs, not a claim about everyone's daily usage.

Example calculations for seven days

| Daily estimate | Extra margin | Calculated data |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 0.1GB | 20% | 0.84GB |
| 0.3GB | 20% | 2.52GB |
| 1GB | 20% | 8.4GB |

## Compare 1GB or 5GB with your estimate

A 1GB allowance may fit a low estimate, while a larger estimate needs more data or suitable top-up options. The useful comparison is your expected consumption over the package's validity.

A 5GB label says how much data is included, not how long it will last for you. Check duration and whether installing or first use starts the validity window.

## Review unlimited and hotspot terms

Read any fair-use policy, high-speed allowance, speed restrictions and hotspot rules. An unlimited label does not define every usage condition.

If you will share data with another device, include that device's streaming, updates and cloud synchronization. Use the selected package's rules when comparing options.

## Keep an eye on allowance during the trip

Review the order's remaining allowance and last update where available. Usage readings can be delayed; an unavailable reading does not establish that no data was used.

If the estimate changes, review any top-up offered for that eSIM rather than assuming a new purchase or deleting the profile is necessary.

## Your take-away checklist

- Review recent mobile-data usage.
- Estimate the number of connected travel days.
- Add a suitable extra-data margin.
- Include hotspot and large downloads.
- Compare allowance and validity together.
- Read unlimited and top-up conditions.

## Common questions

Is 1GB enough for travel?

Compare it with your own daily estimate and trip length. For example, 0.1GB daily for seven days with a 20% margin totals 0.84GB.

Is 5GB enough for a week?

It depends on usage. An example 0.3GB daily for seven days with a 20% margin totals 2.52GB; a 1GB daily estimate totals 8.4GB.

How much data does WhatsApp use?

Messages, media and app calls use different amounts. Check your app's actual network usage and include it in the daily estimate.

Does hotspot use the same allowance?

Use the selected package's hotspot rules, and include the connected device's data in your estimate.

Can I add data later?

Review the top-up options actually offered for the delivered eSIM and their data, validity and pricing conditions.
