How we compared

Data: we use the everyday estimate from the “Help me choose” planner in our store, 650 MB a day for social media, browsing and audio calls. That is 1.9 GB for 3 days, 4.4 GB for 7 days and 8.9 GB for 14 days.

DualLine: the lowest-priced plan in our catalogue for that country with at least that much data, or unlimited data, and at least as many days.

Carriers: day prices are counted once for each day of the trip. A pack is counted again when its days or data run out. Day prices that use your plan’s data assume your allowance covers the estimate.

Currency: carrier prices are shown as published. The “≈” dollar amounts use the European Central Bank’s euro reference rates (1 euro = 1.1225 US dollars = 0.85033 pounds, so 1 pound ≈ 1.32 US dollars) and are rounded to whole dollars; your bank’s rate will differ.

Prices change, so check your carrier’s current price before you travel.

EE: travel passes

EE charges a daily fee in its EU zone and sells weekly and 15-day passes; outside Europe a Roaming Pass is needed for data. These prices apply to plans taken on or after 7 July 2021.

When your UK carrier is the better choice

O2 includes Europe at no extra charge, so a travel eSIM rarely saves money there for O2 customers. Older Three and Vodafone plans also pay less than the prices shown.

Every carrier option here covers calls and texts on your own number; a DualLine data eSIM adds internet only. Outside Europe, daily charges add up quickly, so compare the weekly totals above.

Your take-away checklist

  • Check when you joined or upgraded: it decides your daily roaming price.
  • Estimate your data: about 650 MB a day for everyday use.
  • Compare your carrier’s total for the trip with an eSIM for the same days.
  • Turn off data roaming on your UK line if the eSIM carries your data.
  • Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you leave.

Common questions

Is roaming in the EU free for UK phones?

Not for most UK plans: EE, Vodafone and Three charge a daily fee in Europe. O2 includes its Europe Zone up to a fair-use limit.

Will I still receive calls on my UK number?

Yes, if your UK line stays on. On days the daily charge applies, calls and texts use your UK allowance; the eSIM carries your data.

Why are Vodafone’s weekly passes missing?

Vodafone lists 8- and 15-day Europe passes, but no page we could load showed their price, so they are not in the tables.
