How we compared

Data: we use the everyday estimate from the “Help me choose” planner in our store, 650 MB a day for social media, browsing and audio calls. That is 1.9 GB for 3 days, 4.4 GB for 7 days and 8.9 GB for 14 days.

DualLine: the lowest-priced plan in our catalogue for that country with at least that much data, or unlimited data, and at least as many days.

Carriers: day prices are counted once for each day of the trip; AT&T stops charging after 10 days in a bill period. A pack is counted again when its days or data run out. Day prices that use your plan’s data assume your allowance covers the estimate.

Prices change, so check your carrier’s current price before you travel. T-Mobile could not be loaded for this comparison; their prices come from archived copies of the official pages.

AT&T: travel passes

The International Day Pass uses your plan’s talk, text and data for each day you use the phone abroad. AT&T stops charging after a set number of day passes in one bill period.

When your US carrier is the better choice

If your T-Mobile Experience plan includes enough high-speed data for the trip, you pay nothing extra. Every carrier option here also covers calls and texts on your own number; a DualLine data eSIM adds internet only.

AT&T’s cap makes long trips cheaper per day, and Verizon’s TravelPass includes a large daily allowance. For a single day, a day pass is simple and keeps everything on one line.

Your take-away checklist

  • Check which international option your plan includes or charges for.
  • Estimate your data: about 650 MB a day for everyday use.
  • Compare the total for your trip with an eSIM for the same days.
  • Turn off data roaming on your US line if the eSIM carries your data.
  • Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you leave.

Common questions

Does a day pass start automatically?

AT&T and Verizon charge a day pass when you use your phone abroad on a day with the feature on your line. Turn off data roaming on your US line if you only want the eSIM to carry data.

Will I still receive calls on my US number?

Yes, if your US line stays on. Without a pass, calls and texts on it are billed at your carrier’s pay-as-you-go rates; the eSIM carries your data.

Are T-Mobile’s prices current?

They come from archived copies of T-Mobile’s official pages because its site refused automated access for this comparison. Check the current price with T-Mobile before you travel.
