What Telegram requires
Telegram says accounts can only be connected to a mobile number; landlines are not supported. Its FAQ also says the phone number is currently the only way it identifies a user: whoever has the number has the account.
That second point matters most here. A one-time number is yours for one verification attempt only. After the code arrives or the waiting window closes, the number is released and may later be used by someone else.
How a Telegram code works in DualLine
Choose Telegram and an available country in the app. The price depends on the service and the country and is shown before you pay; it is taken from your DualLine credit when you place the order.
Enter the number in Telegram in international format, with the plus sign and the country code. When the SMS arrives, the code appears in DualLine. Each order receives one code.
- Open one-time codes in DualLine and choose Telegram.
- Pick an available country and check the price shown.
- Place the order; the credit is taken at this point.
- Enter the number in Telegram, including the + and the country code.
- Read the SMS code in DualLine and enter it in Telegram.
- Turn on two-step verification before you do anything else.
When the code goes elsewhere, or never comes
Telegram may send a login code inside the Telegram app instead of by SMS when the account on that number was recently used on another device. DualLine shows codes that arrive by SMS, so a code sent inside Telegram can’t reach you.
If Telegram shows an existing account for the number, that account belongs to someone else. Don’t try to sign in to it. If no code reaches DualLine, the full credit comes back to your DualLine balance automatically: when the waiting window ends, which is about 15 minutes for most services, and at the latest after 24 hours.
If a code does arrive, the order is complete and nothing is returned, even if Telegram then refuses the number. DualLine can’t promise that Telegram will accept any particular number.
Secure the account before the number is gone
Telegram warns that receiving codes inside the app is no substitute for an up-to-date phone number, and that if the account isn’t connected to a number you control, you risk losing access to it forever. With a one-time number, plan for that from the first minute.
Turn on two-step verification: Telegram then asks for both an SMS code and your password when you sign in on a new device. That protects you from the next person who gets the number, because they would also need your password. Add a recovery email so you can reset a forgotten password. Two-step verification doesn’t bring you future login codes, though. Telegram says a passkey lets you log in without an SMS code, and moving the account to your own number solves the problem for good.
- In Telegram’s privacy settings, turn on two-step verification and set a strong password.
- Add a recovery email address you control.
- Set up a passkey if your device supports it.
- Change the account’s number to one you keep as soon as you can.
Move the account to a number you keep
Telegram says you can change your number and keep everything, including your contacts, messages and media from the Telegram cloud. If the new number already has a different Telegram account, that account has to be deleted first.
If you want a number that stays with you, a DualLine line is a separate subscription product, and its capabilities depend on the country. Service acceptance isn’t guaranteed there either.
Use it only for your own account
Telegram’s terms forbid using the service to send spam or scam users. Use a one-time number only to register your own account. Never use it to reach an account that belongs to the number’s previous user, or to get around a ban.
Your take-away checklist
- Choose Telegram and an available country in DualLine.
- Check the price shown before you place the order.
- Enter the number in international format.
- Read the SMS code in DualLine and use it once.
- Turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email.
- Set up a passkey or move the account to your own number.
Common questions
Does Telegram accept one-time numbers?
Telegram’s FAQ says accounts must use a mobile number, not a landline; it says nothing more about other number types. Acceptance is Telegram’s decision, so DualLine can’t guarantee it. If no code arrives, your credit comes back automatically.
Can I log in again later with the same number?
Don’t count on it. The number is released after the code arrives or the window closes, and someone else may use it later. Set up a passkey or move the account to a number you keep.
What if the code arrives but Telegram rejects the number?
Once a code has arrived, the order is complete, so the credit isn’t returned. Credit only comes back when no code arrives.
Where does returned credit go?
Back to your DualLine credit balance, automatically. It isn’t paid back to a card or through the app store.
