How an eSIM connects your phone
Your phone stores an eSIM profile instead of relying on a removable SIM card for that plan. After delivery, you add the profile using the available installation method and choose how the line will be used.
The profile and the package are related but different. Installation adds a line to your phone; the package specifies where it can connect, what is included and when its allowance starts.
What a travel eSIM includes
Data-only plans provide mobile internet. WhatsApp and other internet messaging apps can use that connection with an existing account. Carrier SMS and phone calls require a plan that explicitly includes them.
Some eSIM packages include data, a phone number, calls and texts. Compare those details with a personal second-line subscription and a one-time code before choosing.
| Product | What you receive | Suitable use |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | A mobile plan on an eSIM-capable phone | Internet abroad; carrier voice or SMS when included |
| Personal second line | A separate number managed in DualLine | Ongoing personal calls and messages on eligible lines |
| One-time code | A temporary number for the selected service | Receiving one verification code |
eSIM and physical SIM compared
Both forms can provide the mobile capabilities included in a selected plan. The difference in installation does not by itself decide data price, coverage, calls or SMS.
Compare hardware compatibility and the way you move or add the plan, then compare the actual package.
| Question | eSIM | Physical SIM |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Download a supplied profile | Use a compatible SIM card slot |
| Device requirement | eSIM support and suitable carrier access | A supported slot and suitable carrier access |
| Changing devices | Follow transfer or reinstallation conditions | Use the card in a compatible device under carrier conditions |
| Data, calls and SMS | Defined by the selected mobile plan | Defined by the selected mobile plan |
Buy an eSIM for the destination and trip
Start with the actual countries on your itinerary. A regional or global package has a specific coverage list; its name alone does not establish that every stop is included.
Compare total data, duration, final price, activation policy and any hotspot or fair-use conditions. Match calls and SMS requirements to the selected package rather than assuming they come with mobile data.
Check your exact device
Confirm eSIM support for your model and sales region, then check any carrier lock. Hardware support and permission to use another network are separate checks.
For a dual-SIM setup, decide which line will supply data and which number should handle carrier calls or messages. The supported combination depends on the phone.
Install now and connect at the right time
Open the delivered eSIM in DualLine and use its own QR code, manual details or supported installation link. A reliable internet connection is needed to download the profile.
Read when the package starts. Installation and first network use can have different consequences for validity. Once the profile is added, apply the package instructions and choose the intended mobile data line.
Keep your everyday number
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home line and travel eSIM can work alongside one another. Choosing a different line for mobile data does not itself change the number registered to WhatsApp.
Review home-carrier roaming charges separately, including carrier calls and messages. A travel package pays for its own service rather than changing the terms of your home subscription.
Your take-away checklist
- Check the exact device and carrier lock.
- Read the package's country coverage.
- Compare allowance, duration and final price.
- Choose data-only or the required calls/SMS package.
- Check when validity starts.
- Use the correct delivered installation details.
Common questions
Does every eSIM have a phone number?
The package decides. Data-only travel eSIMs do not provide carrier calls or SMS; choose a package that explicitly includes a number and the required capabilities.
Do I need another phone?
No additional phone is needed when your current device supports the eSIM and SIM combination you want to use.
Can I keep WhatsApp?
An existing WhatsApp account can use the travel eSIM's internet while keeping its registered number. New account registration needs a suitable verification number.
Is installation the same as activation?
Adding the profile and starting package validity are separate events for some plans. Follow the activation policy of your purchase.
Is an eSIM the same as a virtual second number?
An eSIM is a mobile plan installed on the phone. A DualLine second number is a separate number service managed inside the app.
